Summoned to Thirteenth Grave Charley Davidson Book 13 Audible Audio Edition Darynda Jones Lorelei King Macmillan Audio Books Reviews

  • But necessary. First of all. I'm just a regular reader. Bought the audio and digital copy. I say this because some in the community like to read opinions from fans that didn't read the ARC. I am one of them.

I started this series since book was out. I am part of a closed group of readers that started this books with me. Years passed and for different reasons, I was the only one still faithful to this series.

That said. I won't go into details. Because I don't want to spoil a thing. I'll just say, I liked bits of this book, love a few more bits of this book, but I was kind of sad thinking, "Oh no, this one will get from me 3 stars?". Then the ending that was not a ending happened. I checked my kindle, I checked audible...something was wrong? An extra chapter or 2 missing? No. It ended. Like that.

Is obvious Beep will have her book or books. Thats great for this author and hope she can write a 100 more! And I know I'll buy them.

I'll just wait in the sidelines for the opinion of readers I've come to trust outside my group once Beep's book/s are done before I read. Because the disappointment is big and real and it hurts. No only because I didn't find it satisfying at all, also because I know my opinion is going to, at the very least, annoy others. I admire Darynda, she is one of those authors that always engage with fans and is very talented. And the fans of this series are amazing people and I wanted to cheer and celebrate with them. Not be the lonely fan with a sad expression. Envious of how they reacted to this book.

Also, sucks to be that fan that instead of swallowing her negative opinion and discuss it in some private place, need to share it.
  • Wow! I have no clue how to begin to write this review!! I’ve been a diehard Charley Davidson (and Darynda) fan for many years, and it’s extremely bittersweet that it has now come to an end. In all honesty, I have mixed feelings about book 13.

While it had all the feels, the Charley-isms, and the sexiness we’ve all grown to love, it fell a bit flat for me. There were times it felt like the story would jump randomly to a different plot, confusing me. A lot happens in this story, so you definitely need to pay attention, otherwise you could get confused easily. Also, the big buildup for the big fight, it ended a bit quickly for my liking.

Now the ending? I hated it. It’s not what I would have wanted for them, and it was basically a cliffhanger, or more accurately, a setup for Beep’s spinoff series.

All in all, this wasn’t what I expected or hoped for for the ending of an amazing series. Did I enjoy it still? Yes. But I didn’t love it as I have all the previous books. And I hate that the most. I truly wanted to love this book, but I just didn’t.

Thank you NetGalley for this ARC. This is my honest review.
  • This series is in my top five all time favorites and Darynda Jones has not only an amazing sense of humor, but an unrivaled ability to find order in the world of chaos she creates. In a flooded genre, the Charley Davidson series is truly unique, compelling, entertaining, deep, and a fun ride in every installment, so it kills me to give my first three star rating to the final installment of what is easily a 5+ star series. If you have no read any of the previous books, this is not the place to start, nor is this rating something to go by when considering the series.
The reason for this particular rating is that too many primary characters were downright ignored and had no part except a name drop here or there that they even belonged in this storyline, and quite frankly, it was pretty obvious that every character was only named to be an important part to the next series. As far as I was concerned, this book's primary focus was on a changing of the guard. It introduced who will be an important part of Beep's story and found a way, which was really uncool, of saying good bye to our beloved protagonists in a way that may not enrage fans.

I can truly comprehend the necessity, but how it was executed was not satisfying and quite frankly, Ms. Jones missed an opportunity to squeeze more emotion out of this installment which would have upped the overall quality and made a lasting impression. I liked the new character introduced and I loved the revelations. I felt cheated by one death in particular, but as we know in this series, dead does not mean excluded, but what has always made this a cohesive story is how Charlie interacts with all the characters and there was very limited interaction and hardly a role for the rest of them with the exception to one case that seemed misaligned with the rest of it. Charlie called all the shots and made the decisions and that was that. It did not have the same vibe as her others.

I will, of course, remain a true fan and look forward to how Beep and Osh's story plays out and hope it won't be too long, especially considering this book was literally left on a cliffhanger. It's a first for me that a series finale have a cliffhanger, but there it is.
