Countless holy men and women have obtained great benefit from accompanying Our Lord on his Way to Calvary, including the Foundress of EWTN Global Catholic Network, Mother Angelica.

Indeed, the Stations were Mother s constant companions through the joys and struggles of her vocations as abbess and media maven. For Mother, the Stations were not some kind of dismal ritual or dark obsession, but a regular opportunity to lay down before Our Lord her pains, struggles, and fears with the faith-infused knowledge that Christ s sufferings has redeemed us.

For the first time, EWTN Publishing has compiled and made available to you the beautiful meditations on the Stations of the Cross, collected and edited by Fr. Joseph Mary Wolfe longtime chaplain at EWTN.

Each meditation is accompanied by beautiful images of the Stations of the Cross that Mother Angelica prayed before in her home parish in Canton, OH. In was in this Church that Mother Angelica approached the altar of our Lord and entrusted her religious vocation to Our Lady.

We invite you to join Mother Angelica in praying the Stations every day so they can become a part of your personal spirituality, just as they were a part of Mother Angelica s community and of EWTN

Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant Audible Audio Edition Joel Golby Random House Audio Books Reviews

  • With this wonderful collection of essays, Captain Golby rams the Titanic of polite society into the iceberg of taboo. His frank crudeness and naked honesty, paired with his British wit and knack for nihilism, will keep you laughing and entertained throughout. Definitely recommend this one to people who keep it real. Definitely don't recommend this one to people who eat dinner with more than one fork.
  • Although there were a number of funny parts to this book I was very disappointed overall. It seemed to me that it was mostly about his experiences with drinking, either alone or with his mates. There are vague references to relationships but no details nor any names (I may have missed them). I was looking forward to reading this book but got very bored about half-way through when I realized I couldn't care less about the author's life, his mates, his mother, his father or anybody else in there. Brilliant? Nope, not brilliant.
  • I have read articles of Joel Golby's for a number of years now, but this collection gives his experience a new level of depth to the reader. Unfortunately I was in public for the entirety of "Things You Only Know When Both Your Parents Are Dead", which caused me to laugh hysterically and cry fat tears over the course of a few dozen pages.
  • Hilarious and a quick read! Because there are a bunch of short essays, there is probably one that fits your interests, even if your interests are wildly different from mine. Would definitely recommend if you need a little light reading
  • It was offensive to me. Very coarse, boring, and NOT funny.
  • A real cracker of a book, nice and chewy, good for reading on the bus, or the loo, or in bed, or just about anywhere.
  • funny and with heart, brought me back to my younger days (i am of the same age as Joel Golby) and i really related.
  • I truly didn't enjoy this book, even though I had high hopes for it.

What to do, see and eat in Palermo.

The Palermo issue will give all this information, plus more, much more an insight into the traditions, the stories, the people and the cooking.

Be a traveler, not a tourist!

The Gourmet Mag is a seasonal (4 issues per year) cookbook and lifestyle magazine made in Italy.

A journal about cooking. living and exploring Italy.

In this issue, we will explore a magical Sicilian city. A place where many of my friends (and myself as well) admit they would move to if they had the chance.

Palermo is a charming, multicultural, elegant lady, with a lot of interesting things to say and so good at cooking!

We will explore the city as if we were there together, walking around the old markets, talking to locals, tasting their food and accessing their heritage.

The churches are full of history and art; noble palaces are dreamy; restaurants and street food are delicious; cultural gems and artistic meccas are everywhere.

There are a lot of things to do in Palermo, so much that a month wouldn't be enough to cover them all. But we will spend 48 hours hunting la creme de la creme.

Back home, Easter is going to be our bridge towards Spring. We will celebrate with Italian recipes, traditions, and beautiful decor ideas.

I know roses are a Spring clichè, but what an astonishing, magical clichè.
We will nourish our eyes and our most intimate soul with rosy pictures, by a visit to Rome's Rose garden and a little rosy cooking.

After years of searching, you'll find THE ONE, your future sweetheart Mr. Tuna! Sicily will teach us how to cook it properly, how to exalt its flavor and texture, and how to enjoy a tuna meal. You'll come back for seconds... and thirds -).

There's more, but let's leave a little something to the imagination...

Enjoy Palermo and the surprises in the mag!

Claudia

Ebook Gourmet Mag the Palermo Issue Italian food recipes traditions and lifestyle edition by Claudia Rinaldi Annamaria Schram Cookbooks Food Wine eBooks

"I was delighted when I stumbled across Gourmet Mag. A combination travelogue and cookery magazine focused on Italy sounded right up my alley. The arrival of spring sounded like the perfect time, moreover, for an issue focused on Palermo. So when the email announcing its release arrived, I ordered it right away.

The Good:
There are some great recipes, or at least recipes that look great at first glance. (Cookbook reviews from people who haven't lit the stove book in hand are always suspect; you have been warned.)
There are also some wonderful photographs, especially the outdoor shots, and the overall feel of the magazine is solid and well-constructed. There are some interesting historical and cultural tidbits.

The Bad:
The publication needs an English-language editor. There is one listed in the magazine, but I cannot for the life of me ascertain what she did. All of the text has plainly been written by someone who speaks English as a second language. That is, it is mostly intelligible, but not idiomatic. The word choice in places is sufficiently odd so as to create significant doubt as to what the writer was even intending to convey. It reminds me of the English I encountered on signs and in conversation in Italy: many Italians speak English, and they generally do so well, by and large. But something about the grammatical differences in the two tongues makes it difficult for Italians to capture the right feel of English, or the right form of conventional English phrases. A literate native speaker ought to be able to tweak this English-by-Italians into pleasant English with little effort. But that hasn't been done here, and the overall effect is a text difficult to read.

The travel-focused parts of the magazine are not accompanied by sufficient photographs. There were whole paragraphs (and this is not long-form journalism; a few paragraphs is a big portion of the text) discussing buildings or architectural elements that were not depicted. A longer-form essay giving a more vivid written picture of the city could have stood in place of more photographs, but the text that was there was so brief that it read like a caption for missing photos. And there was little context given for the handful of buildings and neighborhoods mentioned: the lack of a map was conspicuous.

While the exterior photographs were well done, the food photographs were hit or miss.

For an issue supposedly dedicated to Palermo, a substantial portion of it had nothing to do with that town, or with Sicily at all. Many of the recipes and tidbits on cultural phenomena were drawn from other places in Italy. That would be fine, of course, if it didn't say "Palermo" there "on the tin." Moreover, many of the notes on culture and custom expressly mentioned that they had been composed based on Google research. I could do that myself. And to top it off, the content itself is suspect in places: I have never been in the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pieta in Palermo, but I know that a series of paintings focusing on a *woman* in a Dominican habit is unlikely to be entitled "the Apotheosis of San Domenico." (Cf. the lack of editing, supra: if you're going to translate, translate, and make that "St. Dominic.")

Finally, the typesetting needs work. The text is too small and most of it is placed against a background that provides insufficient contrast. And anyone who wants to be taken even halfway seriously should not use emoticons in written material. The languages of Chaucer and Dante are both capable of so much more.

The bottom line is that this is a fun, fascinating project that I wish well and want to enjoy. But if it wants to be worth $20 an issue, it needs to step it up a notch or two."

  • I found this Cookbook REFRESHING and so enjoyable I sat down on a rainy afternoon and read it from cover to cover!
The Photography is gorgeous and her humor in her words most playful and REAL!You can tell she has a LOVE of FOOD and enjoys the history behind the Food!Who knew WISTERIA was named after a Shepard Girl who was very very sad!I loved the Hints of History and the content of the food and how it came to be!I can not wait to try the Swordfish Wraps and the Turkish Salami.THANK you for another wonderful issue to add to my collection!I look forward to the SUMMER EDITION!
  • Love learning, reading cookbooks and trying recipes

The Gourmet Magazines are a breath of fresh air, beauty and ideas. Cheers to the team
  • What a pleasant surprise…I expected to find interesting Sicilian recipes, cooking techniques and the like in “Gourmet Mag” and of course they were there, but what I did not expect was how these were being woven together into a virtual montage. Palermo’s cultural artifacts and its scents, sights, and sounds were not just afterthoughts but yielded this larger motif, and my reading was the beginning of my acculturation and assimilation into their lifestyle. While walking through the neighborhoods, admiring the architecture, and learning about the churches the infusion of the cuisine of the street vendor, bakeries, and restaurants all came together. Some of the recipes I will try and others I’ll keep at a distance but overall they were straightforward, and I believe that the ingredients are available locally. It would be interesting to know more about how North Africa influenced their cuisine with their use of raisins, pistachio nuts and…Very enjoyable and time well spent.
  • At once, both a personal narrative/tour of Palermo, and a collection of carefully chosen and themed food insights and recipes - making this a gourmet delight. It is the personal nature of this indie publication that makes it extra special. One reviewer mentioned the less-than-perfect use of the English language, at times. However, I consider that factor to make the messages and stories even more charming.
I have sent copies ( as gifts) to friends who love “all things Italian”, as well as sunk deep into this mag myself, to prop up my armchair travels. This Palermo issue is no exception. Lovely photography, delightful exposure to regional food and related culture, and, what I like most of all, the personal message and stories that the author (and designer) of this publication brings to the fore.
The Palermo issue provided a terrific travelogue with photos of the city and a nice profile of poets, art, markets, gardens, flowers like roses and wisteria, and so on. The regional recipes for sardines, caponata, swordfish wraps, tuna with bittersweet onions, and ricotta pie were all tempting. The references to Easter food culture and sweet delicacies like the Sicilian Easter Cake, Cherry & Pistachio Pavlova, and Chocolate Turkish salami…… are an interesting read.
But it’s the accompanying photography that really makes this magazine most tempting. I recommend it and look forward to the next issue. Each one has been a treat.
  • Ciao! Truly a piece of art, the visuals alone will captivate you! It reads like a diary, full of secrets and historic prose. I cannot wait to make the pavlova for my own ballerina; I will post the picture when I do! However I have no doubt it will pale in comparison to what is seen in the pages of this stunning magazine. It is without a doubt a gentle reminder to slow down, smell the roses, sip prosecco from a 'friend of a friend' and immerse yourself in all that is good and kind to the soul.
  • This quarterly magazine is very well done. Beautiful and large pictures; lots of information about the region. And recipes that look really tasty. Many many pages, for several hours of enjoyment.

From the best-selling author of There Are No Children Here, a richly textured, heartrending portrait of love and death in Chicago's most turbulent neighborhoods.

The numbers are staggering Over the past 20 years in Chicago, 14,033 people have been killed and another roughly 60,000 wounded by gunfire. What does that do to the spirit of individuals and community?

Drawing on his decades of experience, Alex Kotlowitz set out to chronicle one summer in the city, writing about individuals who have emerged from the violence and whose stories capture the capacity - and the breaking point - of the human heart and soul. The result is a spellbinding collection of deeply intimate profiles that upend what we think we know about gun violence in America.

Among others, we meet a man who as a teenager killed a rival gang member and 20 years later is still trying to come to terms with what he's done; a devoted school social worker struggling with her favorite student, who refuses to give evidence in the shooting death of his best friend; the witness to a wrongful police shooting who can't shake what he has seen; and an aging former gang leader who builds a place of refuge for himself and his friends.

Applying the close-up, empathic reporting that made There Are No Children Here a modern classic, Kotlowitz offers a piercingly honest portrait of a city in turmoil. These sketches of those left standing will get into your bones. This one summer will stay with you.

An American Summer Love and Death in Chicago Audible Audio Edition Alex Kotlowitz Random House Audio Books Reviews

  • This book could have been so much more. What an important and currently pressing topic Alex Kotlowitz chose to write about. The homicide and violent crime rate in Chicago is staggering. Kotlowitz says that in the past 20 years in Chicago, 14,033 people have been killed and roughly 60,000 have been wounded by gunfire. The vast majority of the killings happen in a small space in Chicago--but the violence has been spreading out all over the city. National and regional papers report of the killings daily.

I've read another book by Kotlowitz and have found him to be a very gifted writer. He's an artist with words. He has a very smooth writing style and uses words to paint pictures in a way that few others can. I know little about what's going on in Chicago, so I was excited to learn more--especially through the writing of Kotlowitz. But this book felt flat.

During a summer in Chicago, Kotlowitz chronicles the life of African American male teenagers and some men past their prime previously involved in gang violence. In only a few months, we learn of many gruesome murders and lives ruined by the violence.

Kotlowitz seems to blame the failures of his main characters on the society that they've grown up in. Even when adopted out and moved to the suburbs, Kotlowitz's characters return to a life of crime. It's almost, as if, the main characters in the book are destined to kill others. Robbing people seems to be in their blood and hurting others seems to be the fault of the character's lapse of judgment, society, or something else. But Kotlowitz doesn't seem to rest blame in the murderer or perpetrator himself. The murderer or perpetrator is portrayed as a victim and his family as victims too.

By the way--why aren't women included as characters in this book? Do they not perpetrate the violent crime? If they don't, then why not?

The book is entirely predictable. In fact, it's so predictable that it's absurd. We're meant to see that the murders in jail actually are good people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe that's true. I don't know. But it's hard to believe that every murderer followed in the book has a good heart and is rather blameless. I would have liked to know more about the character's upbringing, their experiences in school, and the rest of their life. Two paragraphs--or even two pages--about any of these topics doesn't suffice.

The violence in Chicago results from complex matters and it would have been nice for Kotlowitz to consider and develop each of the potential causes for the high crime rate. Glossing over the lives of the main characters and their families doesn't serve the topic justice.

Perhaps it's worthwhile to read a few chapters of this book. But if you want to learn more about what's going on in Chicago, I'd suggest reading another source.
  • As a woman who grew up on the South side of Chicago in public housing this book, though painful is both an important and insightful addition to my life. I’ve lived outside the U.S. for 20 years. While I currently know many who still reside in Chicago I personally feel relieved that I am not among them. I also feel indebted to the author for keeping me and the world in touch, on a visceral level, with the reality that exists beyond our current environment. It is important to read, to feel, to gain insights about the world beyond ourselves - to experience the humanity of those whose lives we better understand through this book.

This is a painful read and as such and incredibly valuable read. I can not live someone else’s experience. I can become more human by beginning my understanding of others experience and I feel required to do so.

I was enormously impacted years ago by, There Are No Children Here. This book will also shape my understanding and sensitivity to the world that formed me - and fortunately released me from a first hand encounter with some of its most formidable pain.
  • This book makes you think differently about the world and the communities left behind. It's a book that really challenges assumptions and perceptions and keeps surprising the reader with every chapter. There is no journalist quite like Kotlowitz, who can take readers into worlds that feel so far away. In this book, as he does so well in all his writing, you feel like you're pressed against the glass of peoples' lives. It's so intimate. I also love the use of the original writing from the subjects he follows. They come in the form of journals, letters, social media posts, etc. You really hear their voices on these pages. Bravo!
  • Amazing look at the systemic ways that poverty and race intersect.
  • Amazing book! Gives an insight into the lives of those in Chicago. A perspective not shown on the news.
  • From the beginning though the end everything was just right.
  • Excellent book on the effects of violence in Chicago. Generally each chapter introduces us to a new person/family touched by violence (either losing a family member to violence or having a family member commit violence or committing violence themselves and trying to come to terms with what they've done) though there are a few people who have several chapters devoted to their stories (again dealing with violence that they've witnessed, experienced, or committed).

Kotlowitz writes with powerful prose, really showing the humanity of these people and the very challenging lives they lead and often horrific experiences they, well, experiences. Some people might say Kotlowitz is making excuses for bad behavior, but I think he is really showing the societal factors that surround people. So many children randomly killed, so many children/young people killing or hurting others, so many petty squabbles escalating into death. Kotlowitz shows how people struggle with being defined or stereotyped as gangbangers or drug dealers--the assumptions mothers deal with when a child is killed that "he must have been in a gang or dealing drugs." Sometimes they were, sometimes not. Either way the person gone was still a person.

Though some of the people profiled make it, there aren't many happy endings in the book. Some seem promising. Some are very sad. It just felt like a gut punch to me, reading about the things people live with and through. I can't imagine having the strength to endure. Just an excellent book. It would be hard to read this and still dismiss Chicago's violence as just faceless black on black crime (or whatever talking point it is today) that "those people" need to deal with (or as a justification to treat them all like animals and criminals.) These are people struggling with poverty, economic depression in their neighborhoods, mass incarceration, death, and still most manage to keep on living, despite the loss and sadness. I can't recommend it enough.

Mastering VMware vSphere 67 Effectively deploy manage and monitor your virtual datacenter with VMware vSphere 67 2nd Edition Martin Gavanda Andrea Mauro Paolo Valsecchi Karel Novak Books Reviews

  • I've only gone through half of the book so far and have about 7 months of vmware experience but I found a lot of issues with the information it was giving. Specifically in the chapter summary review questions. One example is a basic "what does PSC stand for?" Throughout the chapter, the author clearly defines it as Platform Service Controller, and I knew this from my own research when I worked with it, but the book says the right answer is actually Performance Service Controller.

Throughout the book, the "vcenter for windows will no longer be supported beyond 6.7 so upgrade to vCSA" is written over and over. I swear it must've been more than 100 times in those first 6 chapters. One of the question asks if it's best practice to deploy a vCSA appliance over vcenter for Windows. I would think based on what they keep saying it would be true but they list the answer as false..

One other example of misleading info is when they asked whether a vCSA upgrade is considered an in-place upgrade. I would think not since all it does is spins up a completely new VM and migrates the configs over, powers off the old vCSA, powers on the new one and assigns the old vCSA IP to the one. The book says it's an in-place upgrade. How?

Aside from the misleading information, the book is filled with a lot of funny spelling mistakes. Seems kind of rushed. Not really a big deal, just found it funny.

I would've given this 1 star but it does have a lot of decent high-level info if you're just starting out. Won't really master much as the book gives you generic details for most vmware features. It's more of a "here's how you do a, b, or c" not really a why would u do a over b. It does have some easy to follow step-by-step procedures.

Janvier 1996.
